European Parliament approach on access to in-vehicle data welcomed

Insurance Europe has welcomed the result of yesterday’s vote in the European Parliament's Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) on the draft report on a European strategy for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS).

The draft report calls on the European Commission to take legislative action on access to in-vehicle data and resources before the end of 2018, enabling service providers to offer their products to drivers inside the vehicle, free from any interference by vehicle manufacturers.

Nicolas Jeanmart, head of personal insurance, general insurance & macroeconomics at Insurance Europe, commented: “Insurance Europe shares the view that the lack of decisive and concrete action at EU level on access to in-vehicle data is one of the major factors preventing a successful deployment of C-ITS technologies and in attaining their full potential. It also limits the competition in the market for vehicle data-based services and in turn the opportunities for consumers to benefit from a full range of vehicle-based services and service providers. Such legislative action is necessary to ensure consumers really get to decide who has access to their vehicle data and for what purpose.”
