The Committee of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) has elected David Steward, independent Arbitrator and Mediator, as its new President to succeed outgoing Bruce Harris following the LMAA’s AGM on 19 May.

“It has been a huge pleasure serving under Bruce on the LMAA Committee this past year and learning from his huge wealth of experience”, said Steward following his election. He added that he would now be consulting widely with the Committee and LMAA Members to determine what are felt to be the Association’s priorities during the next two years.

Harris commented that he was happy to be passing on the baton to eminently capable hands at a time when London maritime arbitration is in rude good health. LMAA reported a record 1,775 new cases in 2020 while LMAA members, including supporting members, currently total over 800.

The change of President follows the appointment of James Clanchy, a former Registrar and Deputy Director General of the LCIA (London Court of International Arbitration), as new LMAA Honorary Secretary in March, replacing the outgoing Daniella Horton. The LMAA has also just issued revised Terms and Procedures (LMAA Terms 2021), which took effect as of the beginning of May meaning the new team will also be working with an updated set of procedural guidelines for London arbitration.

Following the AGM the LMAA held a virtual version of its annual Spring Seminar, hosted by Quadrant Chambers, at which speakers highlighted some of the issues of topical relevance in dispute resolution.
