Samsung Heavy Industries Books Order for 4 LNG-powered VLCCs

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Feb. 18 that it has won an order for four LNG-powered very large crude oil carriers (VLCCs) for a total of 458.7 billion won from a shipping company in Oceania. These ships will be delivered sequentially by June 2023.

Samsung Heavy Industries won orders for nine LNG-powered vessels worth 1.2 trillion won in a week, including the five LNG-powered container ships logged last week.

The ships will feature diverse eco-friendly technologies to satisfy regulations on pollutant emissions, including the S-Fugas, an LNG fuel supply system for high pressure gas-diesel engines, energy saving devices which reduce ship friction resistance, and shaft generators which generate power by using shafts’ turning force.

Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries has won a total of 14 orders so far this year, including one LNG carrier, nine container ships and four crude oil carriers. These contracts add up to US$1.7 billion, which amounts to 22 percent of the company’s order target (US$7.8 billion) for 2021.
